Trigger Fist Defines The Platform For All iOS Shooters (Review)

Trigger Fist was just recently released in the App store and though I knew of its coming weeks before it was available I was still skeptical. iOS shooters are plenty abundant in the App store and all promise inventive controls with an awesome first person shooter experience. Games like Shadowgun give you full control of your hero; immerse you in amazing graphics and a well thought out story line. Games like Trigger Fist give you a goat and the ability to move forwards, backwards, side to side and aim left to right. Kind of like some old school Doom gaming, it’s simple, basic and there’s no story. Grab goat, hold him for as long as you can, get shot, respawn and do it again. Not so willingly I downloaded the game only halfheartedly believing the experience would be as great as it was supposed to be.
It’s like crack one week later and I am in the top 5% I am flabbergasted out how I can’t stop coming back for more. First let’s talk about the control scheme, yes it’s very basic much like the original old school shooters but on an iPad or iPhone that’s what works. After a few rounds you don’t even give the fact that there’s no Y axis for shooting a second thought. You don’t need it, yes if you were wielding an XBOX 360 dual analog stick controller this would be a setback but you’re not. You have a touch screen device that allows you to use two thumbs and that’s why the control scheme for Trigger Fist is perfect and just works. You’re also playing as a third person shooter which allows for better game play because you can see what’s going on around you.
Next we address the lack of story well you don’t need one you’re given four playable modes: Free For All, Team Death Match, King of the Hill and Sacred Goat (similar to capture the flag). A story means more game time which could be nice to see down the road in Trigger Fist or a second version of it; however that’s not what the group at Lake Effect Apps was going for right now. The goal instead was to make a shooter for the iOS that was fun to play and that they did. Without a story it means you can pick up your iPad and run through a match in about five minutes to get your quick gaming fix or you can sit down and play match after match to level up and master your skills. Online multiplayer was a nice touch allowing you to challenge or team up with both friends and strangers but don’t think that you can’t have fun without an internet connection as single player mode pits you against the AI Bots and they are ruthless and just as challenging as the online version.
Lastly nobody becomes Rambo in this game, even with the best equipment load out it’s still a challenge. It took me forever to actually be able to just get one melee kill in and the 10 kill streak badge seems so far from reach. There are plenty of places to hide and set up a sniper position in almost every one of the six battlegrounds but after a few kills you better move otherwise you’ll find yourself quickly waiting to respawn after being caught from behind. Your given three guys to choose from all three of which you can choose from during a respawn or before starting your match. You have a gunner, scout and rifleman each with advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the battleground you’re playing could make all the difference in which one you choose. To wrap it up I look forward to seeing more updates on this maybe another character and defiantly more weapons and battlefields. I give Trigger Fist an easy 5 out of 5 and for $5 it’s a great price!
